いつもデザインをする時は、コストや生産性、搬入サイズなどと現実的なことを考えることも多いが、今回は全て無視して、「自由」と「上質」というキーワードをデザインしながら、ただソファーとしての理想を追求した。

まず座ったり寝転んだりどんな体勢でも制限されず自由が得られる特大の座面を用意し、それを曲線で構成することで奥行きの違いを設け、様々な座り方が選択できるようにデザインした。

座面のカーブに対してサイドや背面の木部はストレートになっているため、壁やコーナーにも設置することができる。

これらの意味のある曲線と直線のバランスが個人的にすごく気に入っている。

また、多様な形のソファパーツを組み合わせることで、空間や生活のスタイルに合わせて自由に並び替えることもできる。

座面クッションの中身はコストダウンの為に通常はスプリングやウェービングテープを併用することも多いが、mare sofaの複雑な形状や特大のサイズを上質に表現するには、全てウレタンで構成するのがベストだった。

そこでウレタンの厚みや硬さ、密度など、無数の組み合わせを実験しながら何度も繰り返し、結果的に5層のウレタンを組み合わせた座面が出来上がった。

ファーストタッチは柔らかいが、その先にしっかりと腰を支える硬さがあって、さらにその奥にもう一つ柔らかさを感じる理想的な座面クッションが完成した。

大きな座面はどうしても経年でもシワになりやすいが、それを軽減するために包ボタンも施した。

背中のクッションはスモールフェザー100％を高密度で入れている。

フェザーとウレタンをミックスするのが一般的でフェザー屋さんからは「ここまでするメーカーはほとんど見たことがない」と言われたが、この重厚でしっとりとした質感は高密度なフェザー100％でしか得られない。

そして木のフレーム部は全て50ミリの分厚い無垢材から切り出し、伝統的な技法で組み上げ、鉋や刀などの手道具を駆使して削り出している。

mare sofaは、こんなふうにしてコストや生産性などの現実的な制限を何も設けず、全てにおいて最高の素材と技術だけにこだわり、脇目も振らずただ理想だけを一途に追いかけて生まれた一台です。

Whenever designing, I usually take in account practical factors such as costs, productivity and sizing for delivery. But for this sofa I set it all aside and pursued perfection focusing on two keywords, Freedom & Refinement.

First,I created an oversized seat that offers unrestricted freedom allowing users to sit or lay down without any restraint. I designed it with continuous curves so that there are variations in depth that offers wide range of seating positions.

In contrast to the curves of the seat, wooden backrests are made in straight lines allowing the sofa to be placed by the wall or a corner.

I am personally drawn to the balance of these intentional curves and straight lines.

Also, by freely combining different parts of the sofa, it could be adapted to various spaces and life styles.

Normally springs or weaving tapes are used for the seat cushion to reduce costs, but to express the complex shape and oversized size of mare sofa with refinement, it was best to construct it fully with urethane.

Through repeated experimentation with the combination of thickness, firmness and density of urethane, we finalized it with five distinctive layers.

First touch is soft, but there is a firmness underneath offering firm support for the lower back, then another softness underneath which we think is the ideal seating.

Large seats tend to get wrinkled over time, so to reduce this effect, covered buttons were added.

The back cushion is densely filled with 100% small feathers. It is common to mix feather with urethane, and even our feather supplier commented that he has never seen a manufacturer take this approach, but the solid and subtle texture could only be achieved by this filling.

Added to that, the wooden frames are all cut out from 50mm thick solid wood, assembled with traditional Japanese techniques and carved with traditional tools like planes and blades.

mare sofa was created with no practical restraints such as costs and productivity, and focused exclusively on the finest materials and techniques. A sofa born from an unwavering pursuit of the ideal.
