The sofa

直営店であるKOMAshopを切り盛りしてくれている家では我が妻の店長から昼食の最中に電話があった。

「シンプルだけど手加工ならではの個性があって、サイズオーダーとか配置のバリエーションが豊富なソファーを考えて」

また難しい事を言ってくる。
シンプルだけど個性がある。
まさしくそれをずっと追い求めて家具職人をやっている。
それは経験を積んで上手くなるほど遠く感じるものでもある。

それができないから苦労してんだよ。。などと思いながら口答えを飲み込んで
「はい了解っす」と答える。

そこからが長い。よし！と思ってすぐにアイデアが出るはずもない。
畑に種を植える感覚で頭の中に留めておく作業からがスタート。
そんな頭の中の畑にはいつも50以上の種が栽培されている。
家具の構造やデザインはもちろん、会社の運営や法人向けの企画など色々だ。

まだ芽が出る気配すらないもの、大きく育ちそうだがまだ時間がかかりそうなもの、
もう花が開きそうなつぼみのもの、花を咲かす事なく枯れて無くなってしまうものもたくさんいる。

ふと芽が出たら、陽を当てて、水をあげて、いけるところまで育てるがまだ花は開かない。
すると、また別のものが２,３芽を出す。またいけるところまで育ててみる。
おぉつぼみが開きそうなのもあるぞ。あぁこいつは途中で枯れてしまったか。。
といった具合にいつ咲くか分からない草花のお世話をしながら日々畑を耕している感覚だ。

このTHE SOFAは思いのほか早く、スルスル育って半年ほどで花をつけた。

ストレートの部材でシンプルな構造を持つフレームはサイズオーダーにも応えやすい。
上部の板はカップが置ける程度の幅を持たせ、フワッと柔らかく鉋で削り出した。
メンテナンス性も良く、座り方の多様性もある置クッションはカラーオーダーもできる。
配置の組み合わせにより10人掛けまで対応出来る。

シンプルだけど主張しない個性がある。
一つの完成型ではあるかなぁと思えるものが出来上がりました。

One day, my wife who is running the KOMA shop, gave me a call during lunch time, and said "Please think of a sofa, which has a uniqueness of a hand made furniture, but at the same with various options for sizes and combinations"

She always gives me the hardest tasks.

Simple but with uniqueness. That is what I have always gone after as a furniture craftsman, and is also something that feels more distant as I practice and get better.

I think to myself " Easier said than done...", but answer " yes!" to my wife.

Well, it takes a while from there. Ideas never come up easily.

I always start with putting ideas in my head, like planting a seed in a field.

I always have more than 50 seeds growing there. Some are for furniture constructions and designs, and others are for running the business and corporate proposals. 

Some seeds have no signs of budding, some have potential but needs more time, some buds are already beginning to bloom and there are a few that are running dry without seeing any flowers. When a budding begins out of the blue, I expose it to full sunlight, water it, and do my best, but it won't bloom. Then, another two or three buds appear, and I do the same thing to see some blooming and some running dry. And this is how I feel everyday, taking care of plants and flowers I never know when it will bloom.

The sofa was a fast one to grow, and bloomed in about 6 months.

Frames that are simply constructed with straight materials are easy to customize in various sizes. I made the top board a little wider to accommodate cups, and carved it softly with planes.

The cushions that are easy to maintenance, could be used in various ways, and also there are many colors to choose from. It could be arranged to offer seating for up to 10 people.

Simple, but with modest uniqueness.

I think I reached somewhat a goal.
